Magnetic of All Stainless Steel Series (304, 316, etc.)

October 14, 2022

This article will discuss the magnetism of all stainless steel.

What kinds 0f stainless steel is not magnetic?

The common stainless steel on the market can be divided into Austenite stainless steel, martensite stainless steel, and ferrite stainless steel. Among these stainless steel, Austenite stainless steel is not magnetic. And austenite stainless steel accounts for nearly 80 % of the total stainless steel. This is why common stainless steel is not magnetic.

Which stainless steel series belongs to the Austenite stainless steel?

In the stainless steel series, the 200 series (2xx) and 300 series (3xx) stainless steel belong to the Austenite stainless steel, so the common 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel are not magnetic.

It should be noted that some of the austenite stainless steel has obvious magnetism after cold processing. Therefore, we cannot say that magnetic stainless steel is definitely not 304 or 316 stainless steel, especially for some stainless steel products that need cold rolling.

Magnetic stainless steel is better than magnetic stainless steel?

no. Magnetic stainless steel can only indicate that it belongs to Austenite stainless steel. However, between the 200 series and 300 series of Austenite Stainless Steel, regardless of performance or price, it is very different. Moreover, even the mainstream high-quality stainless steels of 304 and 316 will be magnetic in the process of cold rolling.

Therefore, the quality of stainless steel should be distinguished according to actual use.
